Our Neighborhood Borders Is Going Out of Business...

I'm so sad... I absolutely LOVE Borders... mainly because it is so much more pleasant then the dreary Barnes & Noble in our area, but soon I will no longer have the option of visiting my favorite bookstore in brick and mortar form. In order to reorganize and cut the dead weight, Borders has announced that they will be closing thier 200 lowest producing stores in the country. Unfortunatly, the location about 10 minutes from our home is one of them. In fact, I believe all the Tampa locations are falling into that "dead weight" category... I hope I am wrong... and this leads me to my rant: stupid e-reader sales and internet junkies... what happened to buying and loving an actual, tangible book? I have three large bookcases full, not including all my cookbooks which are displayed in my kitchen... sigh... but who am I to pass up a deal? Dawson and I checked out thier clearance sale yesterday (everything is up to 25-50% off) and the store was pretty picked over, but still offered some great deals in the cook book section - I actually picked up three books to add to my rotation. :) So pretty much this post is just my way of saying good bye to a dear friend - Borders, you will be missed, but secretly, I hope your location is reutilized by a Publix Greenwise market :) ... and so the world keeps turning... and I will just have to look for a new way to get my literary fix.

  4. @ Elizabeth - Oh no! I am going to miss Borders so much! The Publix Greenwise is a concept they came up with to battle the new Whole Foods we have in South Tampa - I want to say the Greenwise in Hyde Park has been open for like two years? It is FABULOUS! It has an amazing deli, bakery, and cheese section - such a better selection then the regular Publix stuff. Not everything is organic but a big chunk of it is. All we have in Brandon is Chucks and it's kind of pricey with hardly any selection. I do go there for bulk quinoa, cous cous and tea though. The Borders is right off the express lanes of the crosstown so it would be super easy for people to shop on thier way home from work - it would just be a pretty small market - but again the whole Greenwise thing is still in a test phase but there are SO MANY people in Brandon, Riverview, Bloomingdale, Valrico, and Fishhawk who I am sure are looking for a better alternative in healthier groceries, or even just a better cheese/wine/deli selection.

  5. That's awesome!!! Hopefully they'll make their way to Atlanta. We're blessed with a good selection of health food stores, but I love having variety and more locations :) I'll cross my fingers for you!!
