For The Love of Food!

Food is fuel. Food is delicious. Food is a way to celebrate and connect with others. It is pretty safe to say that the majority of the population takes pride and joy in preparing something that others can enjoy and because of this, there just happen to be about a billion (yes, a billion) websites and blogs out there that focus on that very idea.

To me, food IS love.

As I mentioned in a previous posting, my family has a lot of traditions including ALWAYS having a get together involving cake, ice cream, and coffee for birthdays, and going out together as a family for lunch after church on Sundays. I grew up with food being a HUGE part of my life. Both of my parents cooked while I was growing up and I have been helping in the kitchen since I was about thirteen. It's quite funny that now, many years later, I tend to supply most of the home made sides and desserts at our family gatherings. I usually have a few requests including corn casserole, broccoli salad, various pies and such. Since Dawson has joined our family, (mom usually makes a request for his delicious version of green bean casserole) he has definitly contributed to our family tradition. Because of our love of food and family, I believe that this love will continue to live on through our children and grandchildren in the future. Because of that belief I decided to begin keeping a family cookbook. I went to Borders a couple of months ago and bought a hardcover 5x7 journal and have slowly been filling the pages with recipes I have learned over the years through my parents and new ones that Dawson and I have come across one way or another and adapted to make them our own. I can't encourage this enough - if you are single, newly married, or even going on your 25th anniversary, try this! Make it your own! How fun would it be to pass on something you have compiled over the years to your family? To make the same red beans and rice with your granddaughter that you made with your mom as a child? The very thought brings tears to my eyes and a smile to my face. I know, I know... sigh... So I present to you a new Hicks Family treasure, our family cookbook...

  1. I can't wait to come over and take glimpse (and maybe a few photos) of the recipes inside. Good idea though. I have always been made at my dad for losing the recipe box that contained all the recipes I cooked with my grandmother as a child. And since he is the only member of his family that is still alive, those recipes are gone forever.
