Happy 75th Birthday Dad!

What a blur! I swore I was going to keep posting the other day, but of course, I got caught up in other stuff... so I will just pick up where I left off on the updates...

Jan 9

75 years... that's three quarters of a century... I happen to think it's pretty amazing... Yup, my dad turned 75 this year... Since his birthday was on a Sunday, we did the usual church and lunch thing but this time we headed to Kobe for lunch. Anyone who knows my dad knows how much he LOVES Chinese/Japanese food, so my sister suggested "lunch and a show" a Kobe since they have those "cook in your face" tables. It was mom and dad's first time there and as a bonus, my sister's kids got to experience all the action for the first time too. There were some yelps and tears from the kids when the chef set all the veggies ablaze, but once they tried the food, they seemed to feel a little better.

Dad & Mom at Kobe

Later that night we all made it to mom and dad's house for some cake and ice cream too. Birthdays are really a big-to-do with us. My family has ALWAYS done everything they could to make you feel special on birthdays -really... I remember how my dad would get up early and play the "birthday song" on our record player for me and my siblings to start off our day. I hated that record... but now I kind of miss it. My parents still have that ancient record player and yes, it still works, so from time to time we play a record or two during a family meal. Oh and of course there was that random knock on my bedroom door in the early morning hours every October 31 while I lived at home... "guess what bebita... it 4:53 in the morning... you were just born..." Thanks mom... again, another cheesy thing that I hated growing up, but now kind of miss. I hope Dawson and I can start some cheesy traditions of our own for our kids, or maybe incorporate some things that my parents did for me. It would be tough to be as dedicated to the morning knock though... Well, another tradition we always used was a birthday cake like many other families. Over the years I know we have had some awesome cakes, and well, not so awesome cakes. This year, dad's was pretty good - Wal-Mart bakery, I am impressed!

Dad and his cake, and yes, I broke out some champaigne...

I think we used 9 candles and a sparkler :)

My dad and me...

So cheers to birthdays... a chance to celebrate the possibilites available during another year surrounded by friends and family.
